BillyGoat, it's interesting you should mention Mark Twain. I read Huck Finn for the first time last year and it was one the best books I've ever read. Twain's critique of James Fennimore Cooper's works is also a hilarious read, but Huck Finn has to rank as Twain's greatest work of genius.

Arkansas is correct. I took this shot from the top of the Mountain Tower in Hot Springs. Good guesses everyone. -

FAFSA WTF confusing???
by tsunami_rid3r inthe sar said my efc was $31700, so i thought thats the amount of money i get from the government to pay for college.
well tuition and everything else is about $17000, and i pulled a $2625 loan from bank of america.
i just went to my e-pay account thing, and i still owe about $4500...wtf??

uh why $31700 when tuition is only about $17000. and my account says i owe $4000. and i got a $2600 loan. i dont know what happened there. should i apply for another loan?
If you'll do some quick research, you'll see that cost of attendence is what the government bases their figures on. Cost of attendence includes more than tuition and school fees--you have to live, right? That's all included in cost of attendence. Your best bet is to get in touch with your financial aid office and speak with them directly. Their job is to get you as much funding as possible--the school benefits from government aid too. They'll be glad to help you, but you must be specific about your questions and it will help if you spend a few hours on the fafsa website so you at least appear to not be wasting thier time. :-) The information is all on that site and at your financial aid office, is freely available, and will be more up-to-date and accurate than anything you'll get on this site.

Man Will Consume the Planet
by joelbear in.
man long ago left the natural order of things that keep the earth as a living habitat in balance and healthy.. he now manipulates the earth to make it bend to his wishes so that he can create paper (worthless profit), accumulate multiples of what he needs to survive and make himself as comfortable as he possibly can.. as the billions in the developing countries become more consumptive the world will eventually be used up.. that will be the true armageddon that mankind will face.

I think my views are best left to Lord Thomas Macauley who said nearly 200 years ago: "We cannot prove that those are in error who tell us that society has reached a turning point, that we have seen our best days. But so said all before us, and with just as much apparent reason. On what principle is it that, when we see nothing but improvement behind us, we are to expect nothing but deterioration before us?"

Does JWD fill a VOID in your life?
by ballistic indoes jwd fill a void in your life or does the internet in general do so?.
or do you think life is made up of lots of little voids we fill with tv, internet and so on.. what would you be doing if it wasn't for tv or the internet?.
is the issue how much time you spend on one thing?

Yes, that's exactly what I'm talking about. Asking someone out in an email, especially someone you're in contact with everyday, comes across as creepy or juvenile. If a guy doesn't have the balls, figuratively speaking, to go to her face and ask her, what makes him think she'll trust his ability to have a healthy, normal realtionship where communication is paramount to success?

I've not been hurt often as much as I was when I caught a relative lying to me, and I came to realize he was a habitual liar. Something about family lying to you really hurts. Only then did I realize how gullible I was, and I've worked hard to change that. But then, sometimes I'm left wondering if this is the best thing. Perhaps it's better to live a life trusting folks and get burned a few times than to trust no one and hurt others in the process. Once that jaded line has crossed you though, it's tough to turn back.

John Doe, that was interesting about the shift to technology, although surely this kind of activity is slightly different to talking on a cellphone (mobile). Here we are complete strangers interacting on a database about an intellectual concept, mobile phones surely are an extension to everyday communications with family and friends?
Yes, I agree--there is a big difference between the internet and cell phones. What I was trying to point out is that so many talk about a void and seem to be afraid to be alone for any amount of time (won't put their cell phones down), but ironically, we're all surrounded by folks everyday that we don't converse or communicate with. I think technology has hampered communication in many respects.
